The Valley is the birthplace of the Chilean poetess Gabriela Mistral, astronomical observatories sector and producer of the best pisco (famous alcoholic beverage).

Quebrada de Talca

It is one of the privileged places for the observation of the Elqui Valley sky, since it is located at 450 m.s. and is enabled as such. It is 27 kms. of La Serena, after the hamlet of the same name.

 

EL Molle

This picturesque village is 34 km away. of La Serena and is considered the cradle of the prehispanic culture of the same name. It is a place where peasant mansions stand out, where typical dishes are offered.

Puclaro Reservoir: This impressive engineering work occupies 760 hectares. and it is located at 41 kms. of La Serena. It is a place where you can not only enjoy the scenery, but there is the possibility of windsurfing and hiking by authorized sectors.

 

Vicuña, The Land of Gabriela Mistral

Vicuña, located on the banks of the Elqui River, is the most important urban center of the Valley and entrance to the Pisco Route. It has hotel services and excellent restaurants, its inhabitants sell handicrafts and products derived from papaya, very typical of the place. The city is deeply linked to the life of the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, so it is advisable to visit the Gabriela Mistral Museum where the archive, library, paintings, prizes and personal belongings of the Chilean poetess, awarded with the Nobel Prize in 1945, and his birthplace where the furniture, photographs and memories of his life are kept. In both places they sell souvenirs and books of the writer in different versions. 9 km away is the Cerro Mamalluca Communal Observatory, which is open to the public on guided visits during the day and every night of the year for astronomy enthusiasts, where you can observe the sky through a 30 cm telescope. in diameter located in a dome. The Pisco Route

A few kilometers from Vicuña starts the Ruta del Pisco, the cradle of the manufacture of this typical liquor is in the heart of the Elqui Valley, where there are pisco, from the most artisan to the most technological. Among them are Pisco Capel, 3R, Artisans of Cochiguaz and the Niches.

 

Diaguitas

It is a very traditional town that is located on the road to Monte Grande, 9 kms. of Vicuña. It has a beautiful square, an old church, dating from 1867 and a recreation of the Diaguita house. The locals sell typical products of the Valley and ceramic replicas of Diaguita crafts.

 

Paihuano

Located at 9 kms. of Rivadavia, is a typical town of straight streets surrounded by ancient peppers from where the Valley of the Claro river and the skirts of its hills covered with vineyards are observed.

 

Montegrande

It is 31. kms. Vicuña and is a historic town formed by a main street, where you can find cultural attractions and tourist services such as restaurants and craft sale. The village has a beautiful church with a tall wooden bell tower. In the School and Mail House, Gabriela Mistral lived her childhood. There he received instruction from his sister, teacher and boss of the post office. The Mausoleum of Gabriela Mistral is located on a rocky promontory from where there is a wide view of the valley. Close to the beautiful square is the milling of Artesanos del Cochiguaz, an artisanal pisco factory that offers tourists guided tours of the facilities and a sales room to buy their products and souvenirs.
